Tetra Engineering offers calculation and design services, working to ASME B&PV. This example shows a typical HRSG split header design modification for reduced fatigue in cycling applications. Tetra performed the engineering calculations, plus the installation and fabrication drawings.

 

The original header has sections at both high and intermediate pressure. A baffle plate separates the two pressure sections. The IP & HP tube sections expand at differential rates during cycling, causing stresses at the header welds and significantly reduced life.

Tetra proposes cutting the split header section out, and replacing it with a HP header stub and a separate IP header.
The HP stub will be welded onto the existing header.
The new IP header will be welded into place to give maximum clearance.
The final assembly allows independent movemant of the HP & IP headers as their respective tube bundles expand and contract, greatly improving resistance to cycling fatigue.
